Staff report
Longtime Lehman head baseball coach Dave King said he was surprised when he learned that his Cavaliers had been voted the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Division 4 Sectional Baseball Tournament, which will get underway a week from today.
King’s squad is 18-2 on the season, the best record in the sectional, but he still thought 16-3 Triad would get the top seed.
“Triad was runner-up at state last year and has some real good pitching back,” said King. “I voted them No. 1, so I didn’t expect us to get it. But I guess there’s some respect there.”
Despite getting the No. 1 nod, King said his team faces a difficult draw. No. 2-seeded Russia opted to go in the same bracket as Lehman, but King can’t worry about facing the Raiders in the lower-bracket finals.
His first game will likely be against No. 6 seed Mechanicsburg, which brought a 12-6 record to the draw Sunday.
“We can’t think about Russia,” he said. “We have to worry about Mechanicsburg first. They have a real good No. 1 pitcher and they play a strong schedule. But of the 11 teams in the sectional, I think at least seven can beat anybody on any day, so we know it’s going to be tough. At least we have that first one at home.”
After Russia and Triad, Fort Loramie took the No. 4 seed and went to the upper bracket.
The tournament will begin next Monday with three games. All the first- and second-round games will be played at the better seed’s home field.
