Staff report

The Sidney Middle School junior high girls softball team recently capped off an outstanding season with a 10-0 blanking of Kettering in the championship game of the Greater Western Ohio Conference Gold Bracket Tournament, the finals of which were held at Ashenbach Field at the high school.

The victory gave the Junior Lady Jackets an impressive final record of 19-1 this spring, and they didn’t allow more than three runs in a game all season.

The only loss came on April 8 at Greenville Green, and the girls avenged that loss when the two met again at Sidney on April 25.

In the Gold Tournament, Sidney had a first-round bye, then took on a Centerville team that won 17-0 in its first game. But Sidney won 10-2 to advance to the semifinals. There, the Lady Jackets defeated Fairborn Baker Navy to reach the finals, and rolled to a lopsed win over Kettering to claim the championship.

The game was scoreless after three innings, before Sidney plated a run in the fourth. That opened the flood gates, and the Lady Jackets went on to add nine more runs over the remainder of the game, with back-to-back home runs by Lauren Barker and Khia McMillen to end the game on the 10-run rule, in walk-off fashion.

In the championship game, McMillen doubled and homered, Barker singled, homered and was the winning pitcher, Allie Milanese singled and tripled, and Heidi Aselage singled and doubled.

Barker had five strikeouts and was backed up by a flawless defense.

The team roster is as follows:

Coach: Tim Tennant

7th grade players — Jadah McMillen, Allie Milanese, Avery Price, Jenna Smith

8th grade players — Heidi Aselage, Lauren Barker, Mackenzie Benshoff, Na’Kaiya Chambers, Kylie Fortkamp, Jayda Glenn, Destiny Harris, Darien McBride; Khia McMillen, Kendal Price, Samantha Reynolds and Carleigh Rinehart.
