Staff report

The Tawawa Park Runners recently announced scholarship winners for graduating senior runners from the class of 2017.

The recipients are Shaelyn Goubeaux of Russia High School, Brandon Simmons of Lehman and Lucas Huber of Anna.

The Tawawa Park Runners is a group of local athletes who incorporated in 1999 as a not-for-profit corporation for the purpose of supporting high school cross country and track athletes. The group conducts a race on the first Saturday of August each year to raise funds for its scholarships. The race this year will be held on Aug. 5 in Tawawa Park.

Goubeaux had an outstanding cross country and track career at Russia High School. During her four-year running career, the Lady Raiders were league cross country champions all four years, district champions four straight years, and made four straight state appearance. She also qualified for the State Track Meet twice.

The boys’ scholarship will be divided equally between Huber and Simmons. Huber ran for Anna High School and qualified for the state championships in cross country four times, earning All-Ohio honors and regional honors in track twice.

Simmons ran for the Lehman Catholic Cavaliers. He was the captain of the cross country team and received a Coaches Award for his leadership in cross country. He was all-conference in cross country one year.

The scholarships will be presented to the individuals at the race on Aug. 5. It will start at 8 a.m. and all proceeds from the race support the scholarships. Runners may register or obtain further information on the race by visiting shelbycounty5ktour.com.
