Staff report
Sidney Post 217 will take on Circleville Wednesday in its first game of the State American Legion Baseball Tournament in Lancaster.
Sidney reached the tournament for the second year in a row by edging Piqua 8-7 in 11 innings in a game that concluded Monday night in Troy after being suspended in the ninth inning because of the weather on Sunday night.
But Post 217 had to wait for a game being played Wednesday night in Chillicothe to find out who the opponent would be.
Circleville will also be making a return trip to the state tournament, and the two teams also met at state last season. Both teams were 2-1 when they played, and Post 217 rolled to a 10-2 victory, eliminating Circleville. Sidney went on to finish third in the tournament with a 3-2 record, the losses coming to Pickerington and Toledo, who met for the championship.
This year, the two teams will meet at 7 p.m. on opening night, next Wednesday. The winner comes back to play at 7 p.m. the following night against the Beverly/Lowell-Napoleon winner. The loser plays at 1 p.m. Thursday against the loser of that game.
Sidney and Napoleon will play a doubleheader on Saturday at Sidney’s Custenborder Field beginning at 1 p.m. in a tuneup for the state tournament.
