Staff report
Sidney Post 217 upped its record to 27-14 on the season with a 10-4 victory over the Dayton Diamondbacks in action Thursday night at Custenborder Field.
The game was not on the original schedule, but was added after Sidney earned its second straight berth in the State Legion Tournament earlier this week.
Post 217 has one more home date before heading to Lancaster for the state tournament next week. Fellow state qualifier Napoleon comes to Sidney for a doubleheader today (Saturday) at Custenborder starting at 1 p.m.
Sidney broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third inning, and it started with an error off the bat of Maddux Liles. After Liles stole second, Kyle Noble reached on a fielder’s choice, on which Liles got hung up between second and third and was tagged out.
But Austin Knapke followed Noble with an RBI double, and after a sacrifice, he trotted home on Tyler Louden’s double. Louden came home when Zach White’s grounder was booted for the second error of the inning.
After the D-Backs scored a run in the top of the third on a solo home run by Wagner, Post 217 made it 6-1 with three more in the third inning, with Noble providing the big blow.
Kyle Subler started it off with a single to open the frame and Liles followed with a double. That brought Noble up and he deposited a pitch over the fence for a three-run homer.
It stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth, when Post 217 struck for four more runs to open up a 10-1 bulge.
Austin McLain led off with a double and Keeton McEldowney followed with a hit. Subler then delivered a two-run single, and he came home when Liles doubled. After a fly-ball out, Knapke singled and Josh Nixon doubled to plate Liles with Sidney’s 10th run of the game.
The D-Backs added three more runs in the top of the ninth.
Post 217 finished with 14 hits in the game, led by Noble, who had a single, a home run and three RBIs. Liles had two doubles, Knapke singled and doubled, Subler had two singles and drove in two, and McLain, McEldowney, and Nixon all had doubles.
Sidney coach Jim Koewler used four pitchers in the game, including CJ Billing, Jack Dapore, Tyler Louden and Daniel Kearns. They combined to strike out 10 and allow seven hits.
