SIDNEY — Lehman Catholic’s girls soccer team broke a halftime tie with three goals in the second half to beat Milton-Union 4-1 on Tuesday. Molly Safreed, Samantha Edwards and Ava Behr scored goals in the second half to help lead the Cavaliers’ effort.
“This was a quality win for us,” Lehman coach Jeremy Lorenzo said. “Milton-Union is a very good team that is well-coached. We knew that this game was going to be an 80-minute game and we had to be the better team in the second half.”
Lindsey Magoteaux scored the first goal of the game for Lehman, but the Bulldogs (3-1) tied it before halftime.
“I was disappointed that we gave up a goal after we took the lead in the first half,” Lorenzo said. “However, I was extremely pleased with how my players responded and did not panic.”
Lehman goalie Camille Brown had six saves. The Cavaliers (2-1) had 20 shots on goal compared to eight by Milton-Union.
Lehman plays at home at 5 p.m. on Thursday in a Western Ohio Soccer League match against Lincolnview.
Boys Soccer
Sidney 4, Xenia 1
Damien Jones, Thomas Atwood, Nathan Miu and Jalen Hudgins scored goals for Sidney in the second half on Tuesday in a win over Xenia. Gage Fridley and Hudgins both had one assist.
“We showed real toughness tonight, especially after a disappointing loss last Saturday,” Sidney coach Jamie Fridley said. “…We stuck to our game plan and worked the ball around the field to find the open teammate. George and I are really proud of our boys; they did not give up when they got down.”
Sidney returns home at 7 p.m. on Thursday night for a match against Northmont.
Milton-Union 3, Lehman 0
After a scoreless first half, Milton-Union scored three goals in the second half against Lehman Catholic on Tuesday to earn the victory. The Cavaliers fell to 2-2 with the loss to the unbeaten Bulldogs.
Milton scored in the first three minutes of the second half to take the lead. Lehman coach Tom Wiseman said the loss is due to a bad defensive effort by the Cavilers.
“We played a terrible defensive game,” Wiseman said. “And I’m not just picking on my backs. You have to play defense in every third of the field, and we weren’t able to accomplish that task tonight. When you don’t defend across the entire pitch, don’t win 50/50 balls and aren’t first to the ball, it makes it hard to win soccer matches.”
The Cavaliers were also being held up on the offensive end, as Lehman’s leading scorer Jake Emrick was being marked up.
“They were double- and triple-teaming Jake when the ball was at his feet,” Wiseman said. “They are aggressive and very good on the defensive side. We have to be able to adjust and have more options. We’ll be working on that immediately.”
The Cavaliers play next at 5 p.m. on Thursday when they hit the road for a WOSL match at Lincolnview.
