Area football roundup: Anna can’t fight off Coldwater comeback

COLDWATER — Anna couldn’t hold on to an early two-touchdown lead against Coldwater in a Midwest Athletic Conference game on Friday night.

The Cavaliers scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to complete a 28-21 come-from-behind win. Ben Wenning ran for touchdowns of 11 yards and four yards early in the fourth quarter to give Coldwater a one-touchdown lead.

Anna was driving at the end of the game but couldn’t score before time ran out.

The Rockets had 306 yards of offense in the game. Travis Meyer completed 10-of-17 passing attempts for 217 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Kauffman in the first minute of the game that gave Anna a 7-0 lead.

Kauffman finished with five receptions for 115 yards. Aidan Endsley rushed for 61 yards on 10 carries for Anna, while Riley Huelskamp had 44 yards on nine carries. Endsley also had an interception on defense for Anna.

Coldwater had 378 yards of offense.

Huelskamp scored an 8-yard run with 4:38 left in the first to boost Anna’s lead to 14-0. Coldwater quarterback Sam Broering threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Dippold with 7:42 left in the third quarter, and Wenning followed with a 1-yard run with 11:15 left in the fourth to tie the game. Endsley returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards to give Anna a 21-14 lead.

The loss drops Anna to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in the MAC. The Rockets host Minster next week to finish regular season play. Anna would likely make the playoffs even with a loss but can secure a postseason berth with a win over the Wildcats.

Fort Loramie 51, National Trail 0

Carter Mescher had two touchdowns and an interception in the first half of the first quarter to life Loramie to a 51-0 win over National Trail.

After Nick Brandewie had an interception to end National Trail’s first drive, Mescher ran for a 32-yard touchdown. The Redskins made a two-point conversion to take an 8-0 lead.

Mescher then scored a 48-yard run to cap off Loramie’s second drive and increase the lead to 16-0. He got an interception on National Trail’s next drive, and Brandewie scored on a touchdown run to increase the lead to 22-0.

The Redskins added three more touchdowns before the end of the first quarter and rolled to a running-clock win.

It’s the fourth consecutive Cross County Conference blowout and third shutout in the last four games for Fort Loramie (7-2, 6-1 CCC).

Loramie will finish the regular season next Friday at Tri-County North. The Redskins have already secured a playoff berth and can likely clinch a first-round home game with a win over Tri-County North.

Minster 26, Versailles 21

Versailles rallied late but the Wildcats held on for a victory on Friday in a MAC game.

Garrett Thompson ran for a 1-yard touchdown with 1:57 left to cut Minster’s lead to 26-14. After Versailles recovered an onside kick, Noah Waymire threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Andre DeMange to cut the Wildcats’ lead to five.

Versailles recovered another onside kick with 57 seconds left but couldn’t score.

Thompson started the game’s scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run with 9:48 left in the first quarter. The Wildcats scored four consecutive touchdowns to build a lead. Jared Huelsman threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Alex Lehmkuhl with 7:52 left in the second quarter and added a 10-yard TD to Austin Brown late in the quarter.

Huelsman ran for a 9-yard touchdown early in the third quarter and Issac Schmiesing scored on a 25-yard run with 2:12 left in the third to increase Minster’s lead to 26-7. Schmiesing made extra points after the first two touchdowns but missed kicks on the last two.

Minster finished with 392 yards of offense, while Versailles had 385.

Huelsman completed 11-of-22 passes for 246 yards with two touchdowns and rushed for 73 yards on 13 carries. Schmiesing ran for 79 yards on 11 caries and had four catches for 37 yards. Cody Frericks led Minster’s receivers with three receptions for 67 yards.

Thompson finished with 96 rushing yards for Versailles on 19 carries. Waymire completed 14-of-30 pass attempts for 212 yards.

Minster (5-4, 3-4 MAC) plays at Anna next Friday, while Versailles (3-6, 2-5) travels to New Bremen. Minster has already secured a playoff berth and can clinch a first-round home game with a win over Anna.

Fort Recovery 38, New Bremen 7

The Indians scored the last 24 points to pull away to a MAC win.

Fort Recovery amassed 453 yards of offense while the Cardinals had 202. Will Homan had 288 rushing yards and three touchdowns for the Indians. Nolan Bornhorst threw for 79 yards for New Bremen and ran for 70.

New Bremen’s touchdown came late in the second quarter on an 11-yard pass from Bornhorst to Avery Powers.

New Bremen travels to Versailles to finish the season.

Riverside 45, Ridgemont 7

The Pirates improve to 6-3 with the win and 5-1 in the Northwest Central Conference. Riverside hosts Lehman next Friday and can tie for the NWCC title with a win.
