VAN WERT — St. Henry beat New Bremen in the third set of a Division IV district final on Thursday, but the Cardinals dominated in the fourth to win the match 3-1.
New Bremen won the first and second set by 25-18 scores and the fourth set 25-11. St. Henry won the third set 25-21.
It was a rematch of the team’s regular-season Midwest Athletic League game, which New Bremen also won. The Cardinals were ranked No. 1 in the final Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association state poll, while St. Henry was ranked No. 2.
Paige Jones had 30 kills, 14 digs and five aces for New Bremen. Rachel Kremer had eight kills, Blake Snider had 11 digs and Madison Pape had 20 assists.
The Cardinals will face the winner of the district final between Cincinnati Christian and Jackson Center in a regional semifinal on Thursday at Northmont’s Thunderdome.
Loveland 4, Sidney 0
Loveland scored two goals in each half in a Division I district final at Bellbrook High School.
Sidney finished with a 14-3-2 record and had the most wins in a season in program history. It was the program’s first appearance in a district final game.
The Yellow Jackets will lose only two seniors to graduation and will return the bulk of the team next year. Key returnees look to be Elaine Wiesenmayer, Khia McMillen and Carly Dean.
Wiesenmayer, a junior, led Greater Western Ohio Conference players with 36 goals and 23 assists. McMillen, a freshman, was second in assists (21) and was tied for ninth in goals (15). Dean, a sophomore, was sixth in the GWOC with 121 saves and posted eight shutouts.
