Thursday roundup: New Bremen beats Delphos St. John’s

NEW BREMEN — New Bremen jumped out early and cruised to an easy 55-31 win over Delphos St. John’s on Thursday to finish off Midwest Athletic Conference play.

The Cardinals took a 20-5 lead over St. John’s by the end of the first quarter thanks to four combined 3-pointers by Hanna Tenkman, Erin Smith and Kelly Naylor and eight points from Jane Homan.

New Bremen built its halftime lead to 34-10 and outscored the Bluejays 15-9 in the third quarter and 12-6 in the fourth.

Homan led New Bremen with 14 points while Tenkman finished with 10. The Cardinals made 20 field goals and 9-of-12 free-throw attempts.

Taylor Zuber led St. John’s with 12 points. The Bluejays made 11 field goals and 4-of-8 foul shots.

New Bremen finishes regular season 17-5 overall and 5-4 in MAC play. The Cardinals are the No. 3 seed in the Wapakoneta Division IV district and will start postseason play against No. 9 Waynesfield-Goshen next Wednesday at Coldwater High School.

Riverside 31, Bradford 26

Marissa Davis helped the Pirates take a big lead by the end of the first quarter to spark a nonconference win on Thursday.

Davis scored 10 of her 11 points in the first as Riverside built an 11-2 lead. The Pirates led 20-8 at halftime and 27-16 at the end of the third. The Railroaders used a 10-4 scoring advantage in the fourth to narrow the final deficit.

Davis brought down 11 rebounds and Kalin Kreglow scored six points and had 11 rebounds. Riverside made nine field goals and 11-of-18 free-throw attempts.

Skipp Miller led Bradford with 17 points, 11 of which came in the second half. The Railroaders made nine field goals and 8-of-11 free-throw attempts.

Riverside finished 10-12 overall. The Pirates are the No. 8 seed in the Sidney Division IV sectional and will open tournament play on Feb. 21 against the winner of No. 3 Mechanicsburg and No. 4 Botkins.

Marion Local 44, New Knoxville 40

New Knoxville let its lead slip away in the fourth quarter and lost its regular-season and MAC finale on Thursday.

Marion Local led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter, but New Knoxville used a 15-4 scoring advantage in the second to take a 22-19 halftime lead. The Rangers led 30-28 heading into the fourth quarter, but Marion Local used a 16-10 advantage in the period to earn the win.

Erin Scott led New Knoxville with 13 points while Morgan Leffel added seven. The Rangers made 12 field goals and 12-of-16 foul shots.

Heidi Rethman led Marion Local with 14 points while Kelsey Koenig scored 11. The Flyers made 13 field goals and 14-of-22 free-throw attempts.

New Knoxville finishes 6-16 overall and 0-10 in conference play. The Rangers are the No. 8 seed in the Wapakoneta Div. IV district and will open postseason play against No. 11 Upper Scioto Valley on Feb. 21 at Coldwater.

Other scores: Minster 38, Fort Recovery 25.
