Sidney athletes earn GWOC honors

SIDNEY — A number of Sidney athletes earned All-Greater Western Ohio Conference honors for the spring sports season.

In baseball, senior catcher Cole Hoffman was named to the GWOC American League first team, senior infielder Austin McLain was named to the second team and senior outfielder Dillon King earned special mention.

Hoffman was tied for the GWOC American North Division lead in home runs with four, while hitting .333 with five doubles, a triple and 21 runs batted in. McLain hit .366 with four doubles and nine RBI. King hit .308 with a double, a triple and six RBI.

In softball, junior outfielder Morgan Carey, senior infielder Summer Inman and senior pitcher Grace Shell all were named to the GWOC American League first team. Senior infielder Makenzie Bates, junior catcher Kacey Swiger and junior Maddie White were named to the second team. Junior outfielder Reagan Carey earned special mention.

Carey hit .357 with five doubles, a triple and 18 RBI. Inman hit .424 with eight doubles, two triples, a home run and 15 RBI to go along with 12 stolen bases. Shell hit .443 with 11 doubles, two home runs and 23 RBI; in the circle she went 12-13 with a 3.47 earned run average and 181 strikeouts, tops in the entire GWOC.

Bates hit .333 with five doubles and 10 RBI. Swiger hit .303 with four doubles and 20 RBI. White hit .344 with doubles, a triple, a home run and 21 RBI.

In track, conference honors were based on placement at the GWOC meet. In boys track, Sidney’s Josiah Huggins earned first-team All-GWOC American League honors by winning the high jump with a leap of 6-3. Devan Rogers took first-team honors in the shot put with a throw of 51-3 at the conference meet.

In tennis, freshman Prem Dev was named to the GWOC American League first team as a singles player. Sophomore Diachi Urata was named to the second team. The doubles team of Michael Ferree and Logan Searcy were named special mention. Searcy also earned special mention as a singles player.

Dev went 18-3 for the Yellow Jackets. Urata went 14-7. Searcy went 9-1 as a singles player. The team of Searcy and Ferree went 5-5.
