SIDNEY — From December to January, unemployment rates increased in all 88 counties in Ohio.
Unemployment was 5.1 percent in Shelby County in January, up from 4.2 in December, according to the latest data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services Office of Workforce Development, Bureau of Labor Market Information.
The county unemployment rate in January 2015 was 5.5 percent, which is not seasonally adjusted.
Ohio’s unemployment rate was 4.9 percent in January, up from 4.8 percent in December and down from 5.1 percent in January 2015.
Nationwide the unemployment rate for January was 4.9 percent, down from 5.0 percent in December and down from 5. percent in January 2015.
Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary January 2016 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 4.0 percent in Delaware and Mercer Counties to a high of 13.8 percent in Monroe County. The comparable unemployment rate for Ohio was 5.7 percent in January.
Nine counties had unemployment rates at or below 4.5 percent in January. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Mercer and Delaware were: Holmes and Medina, 4.1; Auglaize and Geauga, 4.3; Hancock and Union, 4.4; and Wyandot, 4.5 percent.
Five counties had unemployment rates above 10.0 percent in January. The counties with the highest rates, other than Monroe were: Meigs, 11.1; Noble, 11.0; Morgan, 10.8; and Adams, 10.3 percent.
Surrounding counties’ unemployment rates for January (compared to the December rates) were as follows: Allen, 5.5 (up from 4.4); Auglaize, 4.3 (up from 3.5); Champaign, 5.1 (up from 4.1); Darke, 5.2 (up from 4.0); Logan, 4.8 (up from 4.1); Mercer, 4.0 (up from 3.1); and Miami, 5.2 (up from 4.2).
