JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida sheriff says the detective who was in critical condition after being shot earlier this week is awake, speaking with family and sitting up.
Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams told news outlets Thursday that the unidentified undercover narcotics detective remains hospitalized but is continuing to improve.
Williams says the detective was off-duty Wednesday morning and driving his teenage son to school when the detective stopped 19-year-old Kevin Rojas for driving erratically.
Authorities say Rojas immediately got out of his car and started firing, hitting the detective in the head, upper torso and hand. The detective’s son was not injured.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Chief Tom Hackney has said Rojas was suicidal and was shot by two officers when he refused to drop his gun. Rojas is recovering in a hospital.
