BERLIN (AP) — German police say a Berlin neighborhood will be evacuated after construction workers uncovered an unexploded bomb with its fuse intact that was dropped by an Allied plane during World War II.
Police said Monday the 250-kilogram (550-pound) American bomb was discovered midday during work in the Rummelsburg neighborhood of the capital, about two kilometers (more than a mile) from a former stretch of the Berlin Wall that has been painted by artists known as the East Side Gallery, a popular tourist destination.
A radius of 250 meters (yards) around the bomb site will be evacuated Tuesday morning as disposal experts defuse and remove it.
World War II bombs are still found regularly in many major German cities, more than 70 years after the Nazis were defeated.
