Crews search western Lake Erie after boater reported missing

ERIE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Crews are searching western Lake Erie for boater who was reported missing after heading out on the water a day earlier.

Michigan authorities say the 35-year-old Toledo, Ohio, man launched a 14-foot boat off Halfway Creek in Monroe County’s Erie Township on Monday morning and told relatives he was heading to Turtle Island.

Erie Township police Chief Dean Ansel tells the Monroe News that the man’s brother and girlfriend reported him missing.

The Blade of Toledo reports the search Tuesday is focused on the area near Halfway Creek.

The U.S. Coast Guard launched rescue boats and a helicopter to aid in the search. Agencies in Monroe County are among those involved.
