Jury convicts Ohio inmate in beating death of cellmate

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A jury has convicted a 55-year-old man of choking and beating his cellmate to death at a northwest Ohio prison in 2013.

The Blade reports (http://bit.ly/1pAQQex ) Cedric Wright was found guilty Thursday of murder in the killing of 38-year-old Michael Dodson at the Toledo Correctional Institution.

He has been sentenced to life behind bars and is eligible for parole after 15 years.

Prosecutors say Wright beat Michael Dodson beyond recognition.

Defense attorney Mark Geudtner had argued that Wright was defending himself from Dodson who was armed with a metal shank. But prosecutors called it a beatdown, not a fight.

Geudtner asked the court to appoint a lawyer to file an appeal for Wright.

Wright is already serving a life sentence for murder.
