Mourners gather to remember EWTN founder Mother Angelica

HANCEVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Mourners gathered north of Birmingham, Alabama, to honor Eternal Word Television Network founder Mother Mary Angelica.

The Roman Catholic nun known to millions of viewers as Mother Angelica was remembered during a funeral mass for her loving nature and common sense approach to challenges. Mother Angelica died Easter Sunday at the rural Alabama monastery where she lived.

About 2,000 people attended the mass at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville. Many sat outside and watched the service on large video monitors.

Mother Angelica was born Rita Rizzo in Canton, Ohio, in 1923. Her television ministry began in the monastery’s garage and grew into a worldwide religious broadcasting network.

She had been in declining health since suffering a severe cerebral hemorrhage on Christmas Eve 2001.
