Authorities: Inmate died after complaining of chest pains

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say an inmate who died this week after corrections officers found him unconscious in his northeast Ohio jail cell had complained of chest pains.

The Summit County Medical Examiner says 39-year-old Antonio Daniels complained of chest pains Monday night and Tuesday morning in the county jail in Akron.

Authorities say medical personnel determined Daniels, who had been on dialysis, was OK. He refused to take medication and didn’t eat breakfast Tuesday morning.

A deputy found Daniels unresponsive around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities say the deputy and jail medical staff tried to resuscitate Daniels until emergency crews arrived and took him to a hospital.

He was pronounced dead about a half-hour later.

An investigation into Daniels’ death is underway.
