Former Ohio congressman Delbert Latta dies at 96

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) — Former Ohio Congressman Delbert Latta (LAT’-ah), a Republican who represented Ohio’s 5th Congressional District in northwest Ohio for 30 years, has died. He was 96.

Latta was the father of current 5th District Congressman Bob Latta. A spokeswoman for Bob Latta confirmed Delbert Latta died Thursday at a Bowling Green nursing home in northwest Ohio after an extended illness.

Latta was born March 5, 1920, in Weston, Ohio. He was practicing law and teaching at Ohio Northern University when he ran successfully for the Ohio Senate, serving from 1953 until 1958. He then won Ohio’s 5th District congressional seat. He served in that office from 1959 until retiring in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, his son and a daughter, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
