COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The Ohio Attorney General’s Office says the state funeral board authorized its former director to practice law without a license by allowing her to negotiate violation settlements.
The Columbus Dispatch reports (http://bit.ly/2akYO7Q ) Vanessa Niekamp (NEE’-kamp) resigned last week. The board accepted the former director’s resignation Tuesday.
The Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors voted last year to delegate negotiations of state law violations with funeral directors to Niekamp. The Attorney General’s Office wrote the board saying the move could constitute an unauthorized practice of the law.
Susan Walker, chief of executive agencies section of the Attorney General’s Office, says that only their office can negotiate agreements on behalf of the board.
Niekamp says a board member’s baseless accusations and personal antagonism have left her with no choice but to resign.
