ATHENS — A former Sidney resident was killed in a one-vehicle accident Friday night just after 9:41 p.m. in Athens County.

According to the Athens Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol, Tonya R. Patterson, 35, of The Plains and formerly of Sdiney, was westbound on U.S. 33 when her vehicle went off the right side of the roadway. Patterson overcorrected the vehicle, which came back onto the road and struck an embankment. The vehicle then became airborne. Patterson was ejected from the vehicle when it overturned. The vehicle rolled down the embankment landed in a ravine.

Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing her seat belt at the time of the accident.

Unsafe speed is the suspected cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.
