Hoying

Staff report

Fort Loramie graduate Jared Hoying knew how to celebrate the 4th of July holiday last week — with some fireworks at the plate.

Hoying, a 10th-round pick of the Texas Rangers back in 2010, is now with the Round Rock (Texas) Express in the Class AAA Pacific Coast League, and on the eve of the 4th, he lit up Iowa for four hits in five trips, with three runs scored and three runs batted in.

On the 4th, he had a hit against Nashville, then a night later, he had two more doubles. That upped his average to .405 in a 10-game stretch ending with that game, but he has since cooled off a bit, with one hit in eight at-bats in the two games going into Thursday’s contest at home against New Orleans.

In the 10 games since June 28, Hoying hit .324 with 12 hits, a home run and nine RBIs.

As of Wednesday, Hoying was hitting .239 with 68 hits, 46 RBIs, 15 home runs and 10 stolen bases in 77 games.

Last month, Hoying was named the PCL’s Player of the Week for the week of June 9-15, when he was 13-for-28 for .464 to lead Round Rock to a six-game winning streak on the road. He had two homers and two triples, and on June 11, he gturned in the first four-hit performance of his AAA caereer in a win at Albuquerque.

He became the first Round Rock player to earn Player of the Week honors this season.

Left elbow pain

slows Luebke

Meanwhile, Marion Local graduate Corey Luebke’s progress in trying to get back to action was slowed by pain in his left elbow.

Luebke, a starter with the San Diego Padres before he had two “Tommy John” elbow reconstuction surgeries, hasn’t appeared in a Major League game since the end of April in 2012.

But he started his rehab assignment on June 13, and it was scheduled to end this Sunday. However, he hasn’t pitched since last Tuesday after experiencing the pain in his elbow.

The good news, though, is that an MRI showed no damage and he should be back soon.
