SIDNEY — If you like a lot of action, Thursday night’s Sidney Post 217 American Legion baseball game wasn’t for you.

But if you like good pitching, Custenborder Field was the place to be.

Sidney’s Braden Goodwin was nearly untouchable, allowing visiting Piqua Post 184 just two hits while striking out eight to pitch Post to a 1-0 victory over its closest rival.

“This is the second game in a gow that Braden has pitched great,” said Sidney coach Jim Koewler. “Last Friday he pitched a three-hitter over seven innings in the Best of Ohio Showcase tournament. Then he comes back tonight and pitches a 9-inning complete game.”

Goodwin has allowed only five hits over his last 16 innings on the mound.

“Kyle Subler has caught both games and has done a remarkable job of calling pitches,” added Koewler. “We are playing good, sound, fundamental defense, and getting great pitching right now. If we can keep getting the timely hits, we should be in a good position heading into district play next Thursday.

Sidney had six hits against Piqua, all singles by six different players.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the eighth, when Sidney scored the game’s only run.

Jace Barga led off and bunted his way aboard, and Dakota Bollinger then singled to left. After an infield fly, both runners moved up on a strikeout when the catcher misplayed a low pitch. Drew Wehrman then stepped in and laced a sharp single to left to score Barga with the game’s only run. Bollinger also tried to score on the play, but he was gunned down at the plate.

Piqua, meanwhile, never had a runner get past second base, and got two runners on in only one inning.
