Guardians co-sponsors soil microbiology event

CELINA — The Guardians of Grand Lake St. Marys (GOGLSM) is the inviting sponsor of an all day event on “Soil Microbiology and Cover Crops” innovations, in conjunction with local farmer Jeff Rasawehr on Monday, July 20.

“We are excited to be a sponsor for this event, which will host interested farmers from Quebec, Canada,” stated Kate Anderson, president of the GOGSLSM. The Guardians are hoping by opening the event to local farmers there will be a genuine exchange of information and ideas between U.S. and Canadian farmers.

Canada is serious about adopting farming innovations and practices that create higher yields that are less expensive to produce and are friendly to the environment. Better farming practices in the Grand Lake St. Marys (GLSM) watershed would help clean up the lake by addressing a root cause of the lake’s pollution rather than the symptoms. The state of Ohio has thrown money at strategies to address the symptoms but never the root problem.

“We are bringing in some of the top national and international experts on soil biology and cover crops. The presenters will be Jeff Rasawehr, national speaker on water quality and cover crops; Jim Hoorman, Ohio State University national speaker on cover crops and soil health; and Odette Menard, international speaker on soil biology and worms.

“Our nation has long farmed with chemistry, which is becoming harmful to human health and the environment. We need to return to Mother Nature’s way of farming,” said Anderson.

Anderson said changing local farming practices will be hard, however, this event will demonstrate how smarter, safer farming is the future and is good for the farmer and their neighbors.

The event will be held on July 20, 2015, at Rasawehr’s farm located at 8820 Kuck Road, Celina. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch is being provided by “Revolution Meats,” a new designer meat originating in Mercer County, Ohio, and marketed in Detroit. Anyone interested in attending this free event should reserve a space by contacting Rasawehr at 419-305-0187.
