2015 Fair royalty named

SIDNEY — What do a truck tire, s’mores and a toolbox have in common? They were some of the props used by the 17 contestants who took the stage Sunday to vie for the title of the 2015 Shelby County Junior Fair King and Queen.

After an almost three-hour event, judges chose Micah Smock, 15, son of Phil and Mary Lee Smock of Jackson as king and Mary Buehler, 18, daughter of Greg and Judy Buehler of Anna as queen.

Smock will be a junior at Botkins High School this year while Buehler will be a freshman at The Ohio State University. Smock, who shows pigs for his 4-H project, represented the Botkins Livestock 4-H Club. This was his first time competing in the king contest.

“I think it will be a great experience and I’m happy to represent Shelby County,” Smock said.

Buehler is a member of the Horse & Rider 4-H Club.

“I was definitely very surprised and am honored to be able to represent Shelby County,” she said.

During the contestant’s 5-minute speech portion of the contest, Buehler gave a presentation on smiling. She also said participating in 4-H has given her a “true passion in life, service learning and agriculture.”

Smock gave a presentation comparing how taking care of his hogs compared to the 4-H program, using a toolbox of supplies used in animal care. “The 4-H program has given me a toolbox for life,” Smock said.

Names as runner-ups were Luke Bohman as 2nd runner-up and Owen Michael as 1st runner-up in the king contest and Sara Mauer as 2nd runner-up and Sara Bornhorst as 1st runner-up in the queen’s contest.

Voted by their peers, Tyler Wismar and Madison Allison were named Mr. and Miss Congeniality.

During the evening round of judging, each contestant gave a speech and answered more questions. They also participated in an evening wear contest.

Judges were Julie Ehemann, Shelby County Commissioner, Bob Guillozet, Shelby County Commissioner, Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart, Latham Farley, with the USDA, Brent Clinehens, 4-H Foundation, and Lisa Hoewischer, 4-H Foundation.

Serving as mistress of ceremonies was the 2104 Shelby County Fair Queen, Monique Booher.

The king and the queen each received a $150 cash prize. The first runners-up each received $50. The second runners-up received $30.The most congenial each earned $20 prizes.

The candidates for queen were are as follows:

Madison Allison, 16, of Maplewood, daughter of Cari and Dean Allison, representing the Successful 4-H Club.

Brianna Barlage, 16, of Fort Loramie, daughter of Denise and Brian Barlage, representing the Fort Loramie Livestock 4-H Club.

Sara Bornhorst, 18, of Fort Loramie, daughter of Jane and Ted Bornhorst, representing the 4-H Innovators Club.

Mary Buehler, 18, of Anna, daughter of Judy and Greg Buehler, representing the Horse & Rider 4-H Club.

Kaitlyn Ellison, 16, of Piqua, daughter of Kim and Jon Ellison, representing the Houston Livestock 4-H Club.

Erin Gaerke, 17, of Russia, daughter of Judie and Jason Gaerke, representing the Russia Livestock 4-H Club.

Courtney Gasson, 16, of Jackson Center, daughter of Mindy and Tim Gasson, representing the Spoons & Spools 4-H Club.

Sara Maurer, 17, of Fort Loramie, daughter of Linda and Jim Maurer, representing the Merry Mod Makers 4-H Club.

Julie May, 16, of Fort Loramie, daughter of Kathy and Randy May, representing the Merry Mod Makers 4-H Club.

Elizabeth Pleiman, 18, of Fort Loramie, daughter of Diane and Mark Pleiman, representing the Fort Loramie Livestock 4-H Club.

The candidates for king are as follows:

Deion Booher, 16, of Sidney, son Gay and Scott Booher, representing the Scissors to Sheep 4-H Club.

Ben Brautigam, 16, of Sidney, son of Lisa and Mitch Brautigam, representing Fairlawn FFA.

Owen Michael, 16, of Sidney, son of Beth and Scott Michael, representing the McCartyville Producers 4-H Club.

Micah Smock, 15, of Jackson Center, son of Mary Lee and Phil Smock, representing the Botkins Livestock 4-H Club.

Cole Tebbe, 16, of Russia, son of Donna and Chris Tebbe, representing the Russia Livestock 4-H Club.

Tyler Wismar, 18, of Sidney, son of Denise and Rex Wismar, representing the Green Township Blue Ribbon 4-H Club.

The 2015 Shelby County Fair King is Micah Smock of Jackson Center. Queen is Mary Buehler of Anna. The two were crowned Sunday evening.
