Police strive to keep ‘skimmers’ out of Sidney

SIDNEY — Safety precautions are being taken throughout the city to prevent the theft of credit/debit card numbers at gas stations.

Sidney Police Chief Will Balling issued a press release concerning skimmers and how some have been located in Huber Heights and Fairborn.

“Officer Mike McRill recently checked with gas stations in Sidney (and) found that several are using security tamper-tape,” said Balling. “This allows station personnel to be aware if someone has entered the machine without authorization.

“Stations not directly using the tape advised they had regularly scheduled checks of the inside of their pumps to detect any unauthorized devices. If you notice damaged tape on a pump, notify station employees,” said Balling in the release.

Experts also advise using cash to avoid having card information stolen. In addition, it is suggested that you regularly monitor credit/debit card activity to detect any unauthorized use of your account.

“If your account has been used without your permission, contact your card company/bank immediately and file a police report with our department,” said Balling.
