SIDNEY —Updates on various projects were discussed during a recent Sidney Recreation Board meeting.

Photos of examples of a new play structure to be installed in September in Riverbend park were displayed for the board. Duane Gaier, parks and recreation director, said the local one will have a more open design plan than other play structures.

Eagle Scout Nathan Miue, of Troop No. 96, cleared a third of a mile of brush at the end of Whipp Road in Tawawa Park. Miue cleared a walkway and constructed several small bridges for access over some waterways.

Other Eagle Scout projects include eight to 10 tree plantings (each) in both Roadside and Deam parks in the fall.

During the United Way Day of Caring, June 19, several local businesses volunteered to complete various projects in Graceland Cemetery, Lodge Soccer Fields and a number of Sidney’s parks.

Volunteers from Peerless Food Equipment painted the shelter, basketball goals and posts, the park sign and spring animal rides at Riverbend Park. Wilson Health employees painted the shelter, swings and picnic tables in Roadside Park. Choice One Engineering employees cut down honeysuckle and brush on the hillside at Lodge Soccer Fields. U.S. Bank personnel painted the shelter, picnic tables, spring animal rides, basketball backboards and a pole at Sherman Park. And volunteers from Mutual Federal Savings Bank mulched and planted flowers at the entrance gate and holding crypt and also mulched around memorial trees in Graceland Cemetery.

It was reported that Elizabeth Connor, the newly hired Great Miami Riverway coordinator, toured Sidney and the parks and trails at the end of July. Connor’s responsibilities include promoting the river and bike trail from Sidney to Hamilton. She is in charge of fundraising, promoting and advertising the corridor.

The employees were named who moved into positions associated with the recent retirement of Jim Stewart, parks and recreation department mechanic II. C.J. Keener will assume Stewart’s position and Jeremy Dearth will take Keener’s former job.

A reminder of the Sept. 8 deadline for entries into the parks and recreation department’s photo contest was announced. It was noted that only two contest entries have been received so far.
