Friends share anniversary celebrations for 65th year

SIDNEY — Kathryn and Sam Rees, of Sidney, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, Sept. 13, 2017, at a luncheon at Lane Park with friends, Helen and Harvey Wooddell, of Sidney, who had been witnesses to the wedding.

Sam and the former Kathryn Abbott were married Sept. 13, 1952, in the Lowry Air Force Base Chapel in Denver, Colorado. U.S. Air Force Chaplain William F. Fleming performed the ceremony on a nice day. The couple had met, July 9, 1952, at a festival at the Hardin Methodist Church.

Sam is the son of the late Zada and E.E. Rees. He has a deceased stepbrother, Bob, and a deceased stepsister, Kathryn Webb.

Kathryn is the daughter of the late Wilma and Forest Abbott. She has a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Gail Abbott, of Sidney.

The Reeses have two daughters and a son-in-law, Diane and Rick Milanese, and Teresa Covington, and a son and daughter-in-law, David and Kelly Rees, all of Sidney. They have 11 grandchildren and five living great-grandchildren. Another great-grandchild is deceased. An infant daughter, Linda Sue, is also deceased.

The couple owned and operated the Sidney Newsstand and Bookstore for 39 1/2 years and operated Sidney’s Greyhound Bus station at the same location.

The Reeses are members of the Sidney First United Methodist Church. Sam enjoys woodworking and fishing. Kathryn enjoys painting in watercolor, doing crafts and playing cards. They both enjoy spending time with their grandchildren.
