Girls tennis: Sidney dominates Piqua

SIDNEY — Sidney’s girls tennis team dominated Piqua on Thursday in a 5-0 win. The victory ties the two schools 2-2 in the race for the Piqua/Sidney All-Sports Trophy.

Hailey New won first singles by two 6-1 scores, while Naomi Riegel won second singles 6-2 and 6-1 and Madison Frank won third singles 6-0 and 6-0. Caroline Gallimore and Auanna Edens won first doubles by two 6-1 scores, and Mara Hecht and Sara Gibson won second doubles 6-2 and 6-1.

Piqua/Sidney All-Sports Trophy

The two schools are competing for an all-sports trophy for the first time this season, and the winner will be determined by a points system. In sports where the schools play each other twice, half a point is awarded for each game, while one point is awarded for sports where the schools play each other once.

Piqua won the first volleyball and boys golf match between the two schools to take an early 1-0 lead. Sidney’s boys cross country team and Piqua’s girls team won a race between the two schools on Aug. 30. With Sidney’s girls tennis win, the schools are tied.

Sidney and Piqua will meet in two sports next week. The boys golf teams will play at Shelby Oaks Golf Course on Tuesday, while the volleyball teams will face off on Wednesday in Piqua.

Piqua’s golf team beat Sidney 176-182 on Aug. 31. The Indians’ volleyball squad beat Sidney 3-2 on Aug. 30. Sidney’s volleyball and golf teams are undefeated since losing to Piqua.
