WAPAKONETA — The Auglaize County Historical Society takes to the road for its annual spring bus trip on Thursday, April 26, with Cleveland as its destination.

The group will enjoy an entertaining and educational day in one of Ohio’s great historic places.

The first stop is at the Cleveland History Center, and includes “Cleveland Starts Here.”

Discover how a small wilderness town on the shores of Lake Erie became an industrial giant, the home of immigrants and American presidents, a world class center for arts, culture, and education, and a world-renowned innovator in medicine and health care.

In this new exhibit, which debuted at the end of 2017, tripgoers experience hundreds of artifacts enhanced with multi-media interactives.

The next stop is Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum to explore the evolution of transportation and glimpse the days when Cleveland was a titan of transportation. From automobiles to airplanes, boats to blimps, see first hand how things have changed.

Then there’s the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel. The park closed in 1969, but its memory lives on through the carousel, complete with 54 original horses, band organ music, and hand-painted Cleveland scenes.

Lunch will be enjoyed at Nighttown, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. Named after the Dublin Red-Light District in James Joyce’s Ulysses, Nighttown possesses the ambiance of turn of the century New York restaurants.

Leaded, etched, and stained glass, combined with a collection of memorabilia from earlier eras decorate the six distinctly different dining rooms and three active bars. Since opening day, the menu has been a model of consistency, while always evolving as food trends change. Nighttown continues to be a top Cleveland dining and entertainment destination.

After lunch, a step-on guide will lead a tour of historic Lakeview Cemetery. Even though the cities of Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, and East Cleveland have grown up around what was once open countryside, the rural atmosphere that existed when Lake View was founded in 1869 continues to be preserved and cultivated.

Lake View is a memorial to those who built our community, from titans of industry and civic leaders, to immigrant laborers and descendants of slaves. Participants will see the 1890 James and Lucretia Garfield Monument, honoring the 20th president of the United States, the 357,680 pound John D. Rockefeller Monument, and the Wade Chapel, with its Tiffany window and interior.

The day will conclude with a visit to the Ohio City Flagship Kitchen and Shop for Mitchell’s Ice Cream, where visitors can actually watch as ice cream is made on site.

The cost for the trip is $90 for historical society members, $100 for nonmembers, and includes bus accommodations, admission to all sites, and lunch. The ice cream stop is “on your own.”
