Friday roundup: Martin’s big night helps Sidney beat Butler

SIDNEY — Sidney made quick work of Vandalia-Butler in a 62-39 Miami Valley League victory on Friday thanks in part to a big night from senior forward Avante Martin.

The Yellow Jackets built a 15-7 lead by the end of the first quarter, and Martin scored seven points in the second to help the squad push its lead to 32-20 by halftime. Sidney had a 16-5 scoring advantage in the third; each squad scored 14 points in the fourth.

Martin had a triple-double for the Yellow Jackets (9-6, 8-6 MVL Valley). He led Sidney with 14 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists, three steals and two blocks.

Jaden Swiger added 10 points while Cedric Johnson and Devin Taborn each scored nine points. The Yellow Jackets shot 26 for 45 (57.8 percent) from the floor while Butler shot 16 for 51 (31.4 percent). Each squad had 26 rebounds.

Fort Loramie 65, Houston 22

The Redskins rolled to a big Shelby County Athletic League victory over Houston on Friday in Fort Loramie.

Caleb Maurer scored eight points in the first quarter to help lead a 20-4 scoring advantage. The Redskins (13-6, 7-4 SCAL) outscored the Wildcats 20-7 in the second to take a 40-11 halftime lead and finished with a 16-5 advantage in the third and 9-6 advantage in the fourth.

Maurer finished with 14 points while Caeleb Meyer added 13 and Grant Albers added 10. Ty Ruhenkamp scored nine points.

Luke Beaver led Houston (0-19, 0-12) with eight points.

Anna 56, Russia 48

The Rockets rallied in the fourth quarter to earn an SCAL win on Friday in Anna.

Russia took a 12-11 lead by the end of the first quarter, but Isaiah Masteller scored 13 points in the second quarter to help Anna take a 28-26 lead by halftime.

Russia outscored the Rockets 17-9 in the third to take a 43-37 lead. Ben Kovacs helped Anna come back in the fourth, as he scored 14 points to lead a 19-5 scoring advantage.

Masteller led Anna (14-5, 9-2) with 22 points, all of which came in the first half. Kovacs finished with 19. McKane Finkenbine added eight.

Hayden Quinter led Russia (6-11, 3-8) with 22 points while Zane Shappie added nine.

Botkins 58, Fairlawn 42

The Trojans earned a big SCAL win on Friday in Botkins.

Botkins took a 15-11 lead by the end of the first quarter and used an 18-13 scoring edge in the second to push its advantage to 33-24 at halftime. Fairlawn cut the gap a bit with a 10-9 scoring edge in the third but Botkins finished with a 15-8 advantage in the fourth.

Jacob Pleiman led Botkins (16-3, 9-2) with 16 points while Jayden Priddy-Powell scored 13 and Jameson Meyer scored 11.

Scoring statistics for Fairlawn (5-12, 3-8) were not reported.

Lehman Catholic 48, Temple Christian 24

The Cavaliers earned a big Northwest Central Conference win on Friday in Sidney.

Lehman built an 11-4 lead by the end of the first quarter and used a 9-5 scoring edge in the second to take a 20-9 halftime lead. The Cavaliers finished with a 9-4 scoring advantage in the third and 19-11 advantage in the fourth.

Luke Frantz led Lehman (13-3, 5-2) with 17 points while Michael McFarland scored 11. Justin Chapman scored eight points and had seven rebounds.

Minster 48, Fort Recovery 45

Minster clinched at least a share of the Midwest Athletic Conference title with a victory on Friday in Fort Recovery.

The Indians built an 18-13 lead by the end of the first quarter but Minster slowly edged back. The Wildcats used a 10-9 scoring edge in the second to pull within 27-23 at halftime, then finished with a 16-12 advantage in the third and 9-6 advantage in the fourth.

Justin Nixon led Minster (15-4, 8-0 MAC) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Bryan Falk scored 11 points, Johnny Nixon scored 10 points and had six rebounds and Brady Hoelscher scored nine points.

Minster shot 20 for 41 (48.8 percent) from the floor while Fort Recovery shot 20 for 42 (47.6 percent). The Wildcats had a 23-19 rebounding edge.

New Bremen 46, Marion Local 42

The Cardinals earned a MAC win on Friday in New Bremen.

Marion Local built a 15-13 lead by the end of the first quarter and used an 11-9 scoring edge in the second to take a 26-22 halftime lead. New Bremen used a 14-9 scoring edge in the third quarter to take a 34-33 lead, then finished with a 10-7 edge in the fourth.

Reece Busse led New Bremen (12-5, 5-2) with 15 points and six rebounds. David Homan added 11 points and Daniel Homan added nine.

The Cardinals shot 16 for 35 (46 percent) from the floor whole Marion Local shot 15 for 34 (44 percent). New Bremen had a 24-23 rebounding edge.

Upper Scioto Valley 61, Riverside 42

The Pirates lost an NWCC game on Friday in McGuffey.

Upper Scioto Valley took a 16-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 32-21 at halftime. The Rams finished with a 12-11 scoring advantage in the third and 17-10 advantage in the fourth.

“We didn’t come out with a lot of energy, so we struggled early,” Riverside coach Seth Bodenmiller said. “After halftime, we cut their lead to 34-30 after about three minutes, but then they went on a 9-0 run to extend the lead again. We just couldn’t make the plays that we needed to down the stretch to get back into the game.”

John Zumberger led Riverside (7-11, 3-4) with nine points while Walker Whitaker added eight.

Riverside shot 15 for 50 (30 percent) from the floor and had a 32-28 rebounding edge.

Versailles 66, Delphos St. John’s 57

Versailles earned a MAC win on Friday in Delphos.

Versailles built an 18-17 lead by the end of the first quarter. Each squad scored nine points in the second. The Tigers ran away with a 20-10 scoring edge in the third; St. John’s cut the final gap a bit with a 21-19 scoring edge in the fourth.

Connor Stonebraker led Versailles (7-4, 2-6) with 20 points while Jaydon Litten scored 18.

Fairlawn 49, Jackson Center 41

The Jets earned a Shelby County Athletic League victory in a makeup game on Friday in Sidney.

Fairlawn built an 11-9 lead by the end of the first quarter and outscored the Tigers 11-10 in the second. Jackson Center used an 11-10 scoring edge in the third to pull within 32-30, but the Jets ran away with a 17-11 advantage in the fourth.

Lonna Heath led Fairlawn (6-12, 2-10) with 32 points.

Regan Clark led Jackson Center (2-17, 0-12) with 16 points while Morgan Huber scored 12 and Sarah Clark scored 10.

It was the final league game for both squads. Fairlawn finished in sixth place while Jackson Center finished last out of the league’s seven teams.
