February 16, 1896
The Republicans of Shelby county will hold a convention in the assembly room of the court house the afternoon of Feb. 26 to make nominations for local offices and for delegates and alternates to the state convention and to the Fourth district congressional convention. There will be a total of 115 delegates in attendance at the local convention.

Members of the Summit Lodge, Knights of Pythias, will celebrate the 32nd anniversary of the founding of the order on Wednesday evening with a social and dance in the lodge hall.

Two roads have been approved by the county commissioners for improvement this year: four miles of road No. 217 from Hardin to Oran, and three miles of road No. 234 to Port Jefferson. Cost of the former has been estimated at $160,000 and the latter at $120,000, with the state sharing half of the cost in both cases.

Mrs. Marie D. Pepper, known nationally as an exponent of canned goods and presently a demonstrator for the DeGraff Canning Co. was speaker at the meeting of the Sidney Kiwanis club at noon today. Her subject was “Cans and Cant’s.”

February 16, 1946
The first of a series of sales meetings opened today at the Monarch Machine Tool Co. plant with the arrival of the advanced guard of the approximately 65 dealers who are expected to be in Sidney over the next 10 days. In addition to reviewing post-war sales plans of the company, the dealers will be given demonstrations on several new models of lathes announced recently by the company.

Dr. T.J. Emley, wall-known Sidney osteopathic physician died suddenly this morning following a coronary attack. He had practiced in Sidney for more than 30 years.

Anna, defending champions, and Holy Angels, both seeded, will square off for the county basketball championship Saturday evening at the Sidney High School gymnasium.

Mrs. Lillian Sergeant, of R.R. 3, Sidney, lost $600 because she failed to register for the Lucky Barrel prize and her name was drawn Tuesday evening. The prize remains at $600 for the drawing next Tuesday.

A baton twirling course for girls from 13 to 18 years will be offered by the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA for four Saturdays beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Teaching the course is Mrs. David Detwiler. She is director of the Tamette Drum and Baton Corps and a teacher certified by the U.S. Twirling Association.

PORT JEFFERSON – Plans for a steak dinner were finalized when the Port Jefferson United Methodist Woman met last week at the home of Cindy Garrett.
The dinner, which includes steak, gravy, potatoes, green beans, dinner roll, dessert and a choice of beverages, will be held Saturday from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at the church. The price is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children.

JACKSON CENTER – An election date is expected to be set soon for employees for Airstream in Jackson center to decide whether they want to be represented by Teamsters Union Local 908, based in Lima.
An Airstream official expressed concern about unionization, saying it would add to the company’s administrative expenses, even if wages do not increase, and would impact the company’s competitiveness. Airstream manufactures recreational vehicles.
