The Redskins opened tournament play on Tuesday by beating the Tigers in a Division IV sectional final at Piqua’s Garbry Gymnasium.

The squads traded baskets early. Garrett Stammen and Ethan Hemerich hit late 3-pointers to help Ansonia take a 10-9 lead by the end of the first, but Fort Loramie took control in the second quarter.

Caleb Maurer hit an early basket and Nolan Berning made a 3 shortly after an offensive rebound, which caused Ansonia to take a timeout. The Redskins continued their run, though, and pushed their lead to 19-12 at halftime.

Fort Loramie pulled away in the second half. Maurer hit a basket shortly after play resumed and Caeleb Meyer and Berning scored baskets shortly after to push the lead to 15 points.

Ansonia pulled as close as nine in the fourth quarter, but the Redskins sealed the win at the free-throw line.

Maurer led Fort Loramie (16-7) with 15 points while Grant Albers finished with 11.

The Redskins advance to face Shelby County Athletic League rival Botkins in a district semifinal on Friday in Piqua. Botkins won the teams’ two SCAL matchups in regular season by seven- and nine-point margins.
