February 24, 1896

The Committee which has been soliciting subscriptions of stock to the Sidney Electric Railway has secured $10,000, one-tenth of the capital stock. There will be a meeting for those who have taken stock at the Wagner House tomorrow evening to select directors and transact such other business as will come before the meeting.

The County Republican convention was held in the assembly room of the court house this afternoon and short work was made in naming candidates for the county offices, there being no opposition to the parties names. These include: A.A. Davis, Jackson Township, probate judge; Thomas L. Ginn, Orange, clerk of courts; Robert Martin, Franklin, commissioner; William Vordemark, Van Buren, infirmary director.

February 24, 1921

It is estimated that a crowd of over 1,500 people attended the automobile and accessory show at the armory yesterday afternoon and last evening. There was a special musical program presented by a quartet composed of Kerr Carey, Homer Crusey, Harry Dull and Mr. Terrell.

Chief of Police O’Leary today warned local automobile owners that they must have their new licenses by March 1. Persons operating cars without new licenses after that date will be prosecuted.

Herbert Hoover has notified President-elect Harding that he will accept the offer of the cabinet post of secretary of commerce.

75 Years

February 24, 1946

A group of 14 Shelby county young men left this morning for Fort Hayes, Columbus for pre-induction physical examinations. The group was in charge of A.J. Corsaro.

Among other business transacted at its meeting last evening, city council authorized the drilling of two additional wells at the waterworks and the purchasing of the necessary pumps to put these in operation. Also considered by council members during their session were increases in salaries for personnel at the fire department.

February 24, 1971

MINSTER – Martin’s Flowers and Gifts, headquartered at Fort Loramie, will expand to include operation of the Minster Flower Shop on State Route 119, east of Minster.

Mrs. Ralph Raterman will be manager of the shop at Minster after March 1. Mrs. Raterman and Martin are partners in the business they have operated for the past three years.

Shelby County dairy farmers Norb and Ken Pleiman were honored at the Wednesday meeting of the Sidney Noon Kiwanis Club held at Burke’s Banquet House.

Paul Hutchins, chairman of the club’s agriculture committee, presented the Pleimans with a plaque in recognition of their outstanding Ayrshire herd. In his remarks, Hutchins noted that the Pleimans were first in Ohio in milk production for their breed and fourth in the state in butterfat production.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Former Gov. Richard Celeste has not decided if he will run for office in 1998 but wants to raise $150,000 before new fund-raising limits kick in next month, according to a fun-raising letter.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) – Two defector sons-in-law of President Saddam Hussein were killed by clan members who stormed their residence Friday – three days after their return from exile and a day after their wives divorced them – according to the Iraqi News Agency.
