March 10, 1896

Sidney might finally have its own opera company. The books of the Globe Opera Company were opened at the Wagner Hotel yesterday. Several thousand dollars was brought in. over ten percent of the capital stock of $40,000 has been subscribed.

The county commissioners appointed trustees of the newly completed Childrens’ Home in Orang Township. They will be, S.L. Wicoff, three years, W.A. Graham, three years, R.D, Mede two years and Jere Miller, one year. The advisory committee members will be Mrs. John Wagner, Mrs. E.H. Arbuckle and Mrs. O.S. Marshall.

100 years ago

March 10, 1921

Use was made of the emergency hospital the other day. Three children were operated on for removal of tonsils and adenoids. Dr. Hobby and Dr. Le<aster performed the services. This was a free clinic for those who culd not afford to pay for the treatment.

Sidney’s great boxer Hope Mullen was awarded a ten round decision over Freddy Bock of Cleveland. Mullen won every round but one. He will fight next in Buffalo next Monday night.

75 years ago

March 10, 1946

There was a major fire in Franklin Township yesterday. The home of Mrs. John Gross, a story and a half, 6 room structure, was engulfed in flames. Mrs. Gross was in the house, and was pulled out of the home through a window by her son Harley. Sidney firefighters arrived on the scene with the township pumper but the fire had gained so much headway the home could not be saved.

Sidney mayor W.W> Wheeler issued a proclamation declaring today the World Day of Prayer. He called on the citizens of the town to join the church women of Sidney in observance of the day. A special program will be held in the Methodist Church this afternoon.

March 10, 1971

Copper Jarrett, Inc., has opened up a new terminal in the former General Highway Express location on Vandemark Road in Sidney. William Baker, the president of Jarrett, made the announcement. The 12 door terminal is the ninth location for Cooper Jarrett in Ohio. The flirm is based in Orange, New Jersey.

Eugene Brautigam, RR 1. Sidney, won $600 when his name was drawn from the Lucky Barrel. It was at Steinle Drug Store.

Larry Grow has been named president of the Versailles Swimming Pool. Inc. the other officers will be Ron Poling, vice-president, Ed Subler, treasurer and Mrs. Roy Baucom, secretary.

Former Sidney mayor James Humphrey had an opportunity to share about black history, and his own history at Northwood School during the month of February, which is Black History month. A picture in the Sidney Daily News showed his explaining artifacts to sixth graders, Dana Grimes, Kristy Morris and Thomas Goffena.

The “worldwalker” visited Sidney as the guest speaker in the Altrusa Enrichment series last week, Steve Newman walked all the way around the world. It took him four years. His stories elicited applause, laughter and some tears. He had this as his mission ever since he was a young boy. He stated, “If you have a dream which grips your heart, and you can’t shake it loose, you have the power to move mountains.”
