November 23, 1896

An interesting and hotly contested game of football will be played tomorrow afternoon between the high school team a picked team. The game will be played at 2 o’clock on the grounds in East Sidney. The high school team has lately been reorganized and promises to put up an excellent game.

Loramies was decked in her gayest costume Sunday, flags and bunting hung from her homes and business blocks and the citizens threw open their gates and bid welcome to the visiting Knights of St. John. The occasion was the installation of the officers of St. Michael’s Commandery No. 300 at Loramies, which was just instituted this month.

100 Years

November 23, 1921

A report was circulated about the city shortly before noon today that two men had killed another man, the shooting supposed to have taken place near the B. & O. water tank, north of the city. A big crowd soon congregated in the neighborhood and it was found the report was untrue. The facts were that police had received word of a shooting near Toledo and the two men involved were aboard a southbound passenger train due in Sidney at 10:50 a.m. Officers Shepherd, Kreitzer and Welsh search the train but no one was found.

The Red Men’s carnival held this week at the armory closed last evening with an immense crowd in attendance. The prizes were awarded at 11 o’clock in charge of the committee from other lodges in the city, including: John Ziessler, Ivan Apple, Ben Werst, Sam Hetzler, and Mrs. Mary Johnston. The Columbia Six auto was won by Kark Kizer, of this city.

75 Years

November 23, 1946

Sidney joins with the rest of the nation on Monday, when the “brown-out” of electrical signs and ornamental displays becomes effective in a nationwide effort to conserve coal as a result of the coal strike. Under the federal order non-essential lighting in all communities served by coal-burning electric companies will be curtailed starting at 6 p.m. Monday.

Warren Holeton was re-elected master of the Houston Grange when the members met earlier this week. Other officers include: Arthur Faler, overseer; Miss Waneta Helman, lecturer; Miss Nola Wehneman, assistant lecturer; Norris Flinn, steward; Norris Helman, assistant steward; Mrs. Lawrence Wehneman, chaplain; Robert Calloway, treasurer, Arthur Wehneman, secretary.

50 Years

November 23, 1971

Mrs. Pauline Bemus, of 1011 Chestnut Avenue, lost $600 when her name was drawn and she had failed to register for the Lucky Barrel at Flint’s Electric Tuesday evening.

A Thanksgiving theme was featured when the Daughters of Isabella enjoyed a social meeting Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Ed Schemmel.

Miss Dorothy Bird was the door prize winner with card prizes going to Mrs. Sam Daniels, Mrs. Harold Braun and Mrs. Raymond Barhorst.

25 Years

November 23, 1996

A Sidney High School sports star will get a chance to take his game to the next level and perhaps a step Derek Goffena has received a scholarship offer to play at Georgia Tech. the Georgia school is one of the top programs in the nation, having made it to the college playoffs 11 of the last 12 years. The only which could change that picture is if Goffena gets drafted high enough to become a professional. Derek finished his senior season with a .426 batting average.

What to do with those old band uniforms? The Jackson Center music boosters came up with a novel idea, the uniforms were collected and will be made into two large quilts. They will be raffled off as part of a fundraising activity. The tickets are $1 or 6 for $5.00, the first quilt will be unveiled on Meet the Team Night when the basketball team members are introduced.
