December 11, 1896

Next Sunday morning at 7:30, Dan A. Redd, a well-known Catholic writer and speaker, will talk in the assembly room of the court house on the work of the Catholic church among the colored people. Mr. Redd is a colored man and is editor of the only Catholic newspaper published by his race.

Joseph Bankamper and company have opened a butcher shop in the Yenney building at the corner of Main Avenue and North Street.

100 years

December 11, 1921

At the short session of city council last evening, the finance committee made its report on the matter of reducing the salaries of certain officials of the city, stating that it would not be advisable to take such action at the present time. The matter was discussed at length but no action taken on the report.

The penitentiary for every automobile thief, whether he says he was “joy riding” or intending to steal the machine, would soon put an end to most of the thieving that is now going on.

75 years

December 11, 1946

A.L. Sprague was re-elected president of the Jackson Center Merchants’ Association at the annual meeting held earlier this week at the Hughes Restaurant annex. Named to serve with Sprague are: C.L. Buirley, vice president; C.L. Brackney, treasurer; Bernard Van Horn, secretary; with E.W. Hughes, Harmon Fox, and C.E. Duff, members of the board of directors.

New York City was selected today by the headquarters committee for the United Nations as the permanent home of the world body. By a vote of 33 to 7, the committee accepted the offer of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and the city of New York for the site along the East river.

December 11, 1971

JACKSON CENTER – Don Holt, of 102 Oak Street, who has made a 26-year-career in teaching in the local school, will begin a new position sometime after Dec. 31. He will be sworn in as mayor of the village replacing Carl Zwiebel, who chose not to run for mayor again.

An estimated 2,400 Dayton Power & Light Co. utility workers struck that firm late Friday in the first strike ever sustained by the electric and natural gas supplier.

December 11, 1996

Kroger’s new Sidney store opened today after a grand-opening ceremony shortly before 8 a.m. The parking lot was crowded with cars as shoppers visited the new location.

BOTKINS – “Because I Love You” is the theme for homecoming at Botkins High School. Vying for king are: Bryce Cole, Bob Doseck, Nick Greve and Jamie Wellman. Vying for queen are: Jessica Davis, Krista Dietz, Emily Kempfer and Jenni Limbert.
