Next Sunday morning at 7:30, Dan A. Redd, a well-known Catholic writer and speaker, will talk in the assembly room of the court house on the work of the Catholic church among the colored people. Mr. Redd is a colored man and is editor of the only Catholic newspaper published by his race.

At the short session of city council last evening, the finance committee made its report on the matter of reducing the salaries of certain officials of the city, stating that it would not be advisable to take such action at the present time. The matter was discussed at length but no action taken on the report.

A.L. Sprague was re-elected president of the Jackson Center Merchants’ Association at the annual meeting held earlier this week at the Hughes Restaurant annex. Named to serve with Sprague are: C.L. Buirley, vice president; C.L. Brackney, treasurer; Bernard Van Horn, secretary; with E.W. Hughes, Harmon Fox, and C.E. Duff, members of the board of directors.

New York City was selected today by the headquarters committee for the United Nations as the permanent home of the world body. By a vote of 33 to 7, the committee accepted the offer of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and the city of New York for the site along the East river.

JACKSON CENTER – Don Holt, of 102 Oak Street, who has made a 26-year-career in teaching in the local school, will begin a new position sometime after Dec. 31. He will be sworn in as mayor of the village replacing Carl Zwiebel, who chose not to run for mayor again.

Kroger’s new Sidney store opened today after a grand-opening ceremony shortly before 8 a.m. The parking lot was crowded with cars as shoppers visited the new location.
