January 7, 1898

The board of health at its meeting last evening in the mayor’s office adopted a resolution, calling upon the council to submit to the voters at the next municipal election, a bond issue for the purpose of constructing a complete sewer system for the city. The board noted that the health of the community demands such a system of sewerage.

Smith Bracey, of Chicago, accompanied by his engineer, J.S. McNair, also of Chicago, arrived here this morning. They came to push ahead the preliminary arrangements and the construction of the proposed Miami River and Belt railroad. The first thing they will do is to select a good entrance into Sidney and they were out today looking over the ground preparatory to selecting an entrance.

100 Years

January 7, 1923

The fire department answered a call last night to the home of William Vaughn, located along the railroad west of Highland avenue. The house, a small one, was completely destroyed. Vaughn, who had been living alone, was away and when he returned found the interior of the house ablaze.

75 Years

January 7, 1948

Judge Huber A. Berry today continued the restraining order issued last week, limiting the number of pickets at the two plants of the Slusser-McLean Scraper Co. His decision follows a hearing held earlier in the week and limits the picketing to peaceful persuasion and not more than two pickets at each gate of the plants. UE-CIO Local 776 had sought to have the injunction removed.

Frank DeLoye, of northern Cynthian township, prominent dairy farmer and livestock raiser, today formally announced that he would be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for county commissioner in the primary election next May.

50 Years

January 7, 1973

“Yes, I’ll miss it, no question about it. When you do anything for 12 years, you’re going to miss it,” Thaleon Blake, said in an interview this week. Blake was succeeded Monday by his daughter, Barbara Geuy, as Shelby County Clerk of Common Pleas Court. He has served in that capacity for three terms.

Would Blake run for clerk if he had it to do over again? “Yes! And I would probably have done it sooner, when I was younger.”

ANNA – Anna’s Rockets utilized good shooting to turn back Houston’s Wildcats, 80-64, in a Shelby County League class on the local board Friday night. Bruce Top and Bob Kindred paced Anna with 28 and 26 points, in the order mentioned, while Tony Schemmel added 15.

25 Years

January 7, 1998

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) – Discussion about shifts in the state’s school financing system could take place in the courtroom of the judge who set the changes into motion.

Judge Linton Lewis of Perry County Common Pleas Court plans to conduct hearings on the Legislature’s school-funding solution, the Blade reported Sunday.

The Ohio Supreme Court has given lawmakers until March 24 to find an alternative to the way the state currently finances public schools. The hearings will help Lewis decide whether the Legislature’s solution complies with the court’s order.
