Friday basketball roundup: Sidney can’t hold on late against West Carrollton

SIDNEY — Sidney played hot early on senior night and nearly upset West Carrollton in a Miami Valley League game on Friday. But the Pirates rallied in the second half and survived a last-second shot attempt to hand the Yellow Jackets a 53-52 defeat.

Sidney took a 10-2 lead early and led 15-7 at the end of the first quarter. West Carrollton cut the gap slightly to 31-25 at halftime, then used a 15-10 scoring edge in the second quarter to pull within 41-40.

West Carroltton continued its run in the second quarter and led 49-45 with about four minutes left, but Sidney stayed in it.

Julius Spradling made a 3 to cut the gap to 49-48 with about 3:25 left. The teams then traded baskets until Sidney forced a turnover with less than 30 seconds left.

A jump ball was called with eight seconds left during a shot attempt by Sam Reynolds that was blocked without Reynolds losing the ball. The Yellow Jackets threw the ball in from under their own basket, and a last-second shot attempt hit off the back of the rim shortly before the buzzer.

Spradling led Sidney with 18 points and had three rebounds and two steals. Reynolds, a senior wing guard, scored nine points and had nine rebounds and four assists.

Jayce Daniel scored eight points and Jy Foster-Wheeler, a senior guard, had eight points and eight rebounds. Myles Vordemark, a senior guard, scored seven points and had six rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets shot 19 for 46 (41.3 percent) from the floor and had 28 rebounds.

The loss was the eighth in a row for Sidney (7-13, 6-10 MVL Valley Division), which lost 71-54 at West Carrollton on Dec. 20.

Russia 56, Botkins 33

The Raiders pulled away in the second half to earn a Shelby County Athletic League victory on Friday in Botkins.

Russia built an 11-5 lead by the end of the first quarter, but the Trojans used a 15-14 edge to pull within 25-20 at halftime. The Raiders outscored Botkins 13-3 in the third and 18-10 in the fourth to pull away.

Russia improved to 17-2 overall and 10-1 in SCAL play. No statistics were reported.

Collin Doseck led Botkins (11-8, 6-5) with 15 points while Carter Pleiman scored eight.

Jackson Center 65, Fairlawn 20

The Tigers cruised to a lopsided SCAL victory on Friday in Jackson Center.

Jace Mullenhour led Jackson Center (18-1, 10-1) with 13 points while Nolan Fark scored 12, Bryson Roberts scored 11 and Reed Platfoot scored nine.

The Jets dropped to 2-18 overall and 0-12 in SCAL play.

Fort Loramie 62, Houston 36

The Redskins won an SCAL game on Friday in Fort Loramie.

Fort Loramie built a 23-7 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 33-14 at halftime and 51-30 at the end of the third quarter.

Ethan Keiser led Fort Loramie (14-5, 7-4) with 19 points while Caleb Maurer scored 17 and Logan Eilerman scored 10.

Rusty Vondenhuevel led Houston (2-16, 2-9) with eight points.

Troy Christian 53, Lehman Catholic 52 OT

The Cavaliers went toe-to-toe with state-ranked Troy Christian in a Three Rivers Conference game on Friday in Troy but came up short in overtime.

Lehman led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter, but the Eagles used a 16-8 advantage in the second to take a 28-26 halftime lead. The Eagles led 37-36 at the end of the third before Lehman forced overtime with a 47-47 tie. Troy Christian finished with a 6-5 edge in overtime.

Justin Chapman scored 14 points for the Cavaliers and had 10 rebounds. Turner Lachey scored 14 points and Daniel Carlisle scored nine.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak by Lehman (13-7, 7-6 TRC).

Covington 67, Riverside 60

The Pirates lost a TRC game on Friday in Covington.

Covington led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter, 34-24 at halftime and 52-43 at the end of the third quarter.

Myles Platfoot led Riverside (7-12, 3-10) with 21 points, three rebounds and three blocks. Warren Shockey scored 13 points and had three steals. Ayden Clary scored eight points and had seven assists and four blocks.
