Baseball: Anna pulls away from Sidney in 4th inning

SIDNEY — Five errors in the fourth inning doomed Sidney and bolstered Anna in a nonconference game on Thursday.

The Rockets scored nine runs in the fourth and ran away to a 12-3 victory. It’s the third win in the last four games for Anna, which improves to 4-5 overall. It’s the fourth consecutive loss for Sidney since a 5-0 start.

The Yellow Jackets led 3-2 before the fourth.

Carson Pleiman hit a ground ball to third and reached on an error to start the inning, then Troy Wolters hit a single to left. Clay Cummins hit a sacrifice bunt, then leadoff hitter Zach Osborn hit a line-drive single to left to push across one run and tie it.

Carter Seigle drew a walk to load the bases, then Colin Elliott reached on an error after hitting a fly ball to right. Two runs scored on the error to give Anna a 5-3 lead.

Aiden Keller then hit a sacrifice bunt to drive in another run, then Caleb Kenton reached on an infield error after hitting a hard ground ball, and one run scored on the error to push the lead to 7-3.

The Yellow Jackets then put Tucker Herron on the mound in place of starter Ethan New, but he walked the next two batters, the second of which pushed across another run. Pleiman then reached on an infield error after hitting a ground ball, and three runs scored on the error to give the Rockets an 11-3 lead.

Anna added another run on one hit and a walk in the fifth.

The Rockets had nine hits and committed one error, while Sidney had four hits and committed seven errors.

Kenton took the mound with two outs in the first and pitched the rest of the way. He gave up three hits while walking two batters and striking out four.

New was charged with the loss. He pitched 3 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run on seven hits and three walks while striking out one batter. Herron pitched 3 1/3 innings and gave up one earned run on two hits and five walks.

Wolters was 3 for 3 for Anna while Elliott drew three walks. Keller hit one double. Osborn had 2 RBIs.

Aiden Booth was 1 for 2 with one triple for Sidney while Gavin Roberts was 1 for 2 with two walks. Nick Nuss drew two walks. Ian Arnold hit one double.

Sidney scored all three of its runs in the first.

Roberts drew a walk to lead off the inning, then Arnold hit a double to right. Booth was hit a by a pitch to load the bases for Mitchell Davis, who drove in a run on a ground out.

Nuss then drew a walk, then Landyn Arnold hit into a fielder’s choice that resulted in Arnold being thrown out at home.

Ike was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to drive in one run. Anna then put Kenton on the mound, but he hit Sam New with a pitch to drive in another run.

Kenton drew a fly out to end the inning and contained the Yellow Jackets’ hitters the rest of the way.

The Rockets scored two runs on three hits, one walk and one error in the second to pull within 3-2 before their big fourth inning.

Anna is scheduled to host Minster on Saturday. Sidney was scheduled to host Xenia in a Miami Valley League game on Friday and is scheduled to travel to the Buccaneers’ field on Monday.
