Baseball: Botkins loses 4-2 to Lima Perry at Day-Air Ballpark

DAYTON — A bad second inning was too much for Botkins to overcome in a nonconference game on Sunday night at Day-Air Ballpark.

The Trojans gave up four runs to Lima Perry in the inning. They cut into the gap late, but lost 4-2 to drop to 12-8 overall.

Brant Metz struck out the first batter of the second, but the next four batters hit singles.

Sylas Johnson hit a hard ground ball single to short, then Brady Mullholland hit a line-drive single to left field. Preston Evans hit a fly ball single to left, which drove in Johnson to give the Commodores a 1-0 lead.

Marcus Hill then hit a line-drive single to left to load the bases. Brady Shively followed by hitting a fly to Hunter Lenhart in center field, and Lenhart threw to catcher Levi Frey, who tagged out Mulholland at home.

But Brodey Douce then hit a 2-RBI double on a fly ball to left, then Hunter Scott hit a line-drive single to right to drive in another run and give Perry a 4-0 lead.

The Trojans battled back late. After two strikeouts to start the fifth, Lenhart drew a walk, then Frey hit a fly ball single to center field to drive in Lenhart and cut the gap to 4-1.

Metz led off the sixth with a line-drive triple to left field, then scored with one out on a line out by CJ Buehler.

Lenhart hit a two-out single in the seventh but didn’t advance passed first.

Metz was charged with the loss. He pitched two innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out three.

Carson Motter pitched four innings in relief. He gave up one hit and struck out five batters.

Motter and Metz were each 1 for 2 at the plate with one walk.

Scott picked up the win for Perry (8-11). He pitched a complete game and gave up two earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out 12 batters.

Johnson was 2 for 3 at the plate for Perry.

Carson Motter and Metz each drew walks with two outs in the first, but Motter was caught stealing third.

The Trojans’ also had an opportunity in the fourth. Motter hit a line-drive double to center field, then Brandt Boerger hit a ground ball that was misplayed by short stop Cody Burgess.

But Scott struck out Buehler, then coaxed a ground out by Corey Koenig to end the inning.

The game was originally scheduled for April 21 but was postponed due to weather.

The Trojans were scheduled to host Anna on Tuesday in a Shelby County Athletic League game; they’re scheduled to travel to Anna on Thursday and to host Fairlawn on Friday in league action.

Botkins was voted the No. 5 seed in the northern Dayton Division IV sectional and will host No. 7 Riverside (8-12) to open postseason play on Monday.
