ST. MARYS — The Sidney Yellow Jackets boys soccer team lost their second game in a row on Thursday 6-1 against the St. Mary’s Roughriders at St. Mary’s West Intermediate School.

The Yellow Jackets (8-4-0, 5-2-0) have lost their last two matches by a combined score of 13-1.

“We have to stop playing the ball to the middle and use our wings,” Sidney head coach Jamie Fridley said. “That’s what we have them for. That’s what got us to 7-0 and that’s what we have to get back to.”

The Yellow Jackets looked to score early in the game but came up short on two occasions, giving up momentum to the Roughriders in the process.

“We came out strong,” Fridley said. “We had two goals that we missed, one on an open net where our players tried to take the ball away from one another and the other we just got unlucky.”

Off the back of those missed goals, St. Marys was able to capitalize to the tune of four first half goals, taking a 4-0 lead into the second half.

After another Roughriders goal early in the second half, Sidney was able to get on the board when Youssouf Dia scored on a breakaway to cut the lead to 5-1 with just under nine minutes to play.

Dia was assisted by Zac Ambos on the play.

“Early in the game, we started crashing,” Fridley said when asked for a positive take away from the game. “But our team’s problem is when we face adversity, we can’t come back from it. It happened to us against Butler, Troy and Fairmont.

“That was a beatable team for us and normally we play them pretty close, but this time just wasn’t our night.”

The Yellow Jackets will take their first place in the Miami Valley League Valley Division into an MVL matchup at Sidney High School against overall MVL leader Tippecanoe on Tuesday.
