Girls soccer: Botkins earns share of WOSL with win over Spencerville

Botkins’ Addison Blindauer weaves through Spencerville defenders during Monday’s match at Botkins.

BOTKINS — The Botkins Trojans girls soccer team took down Spencerville 5-0 in a muddy Western Ohio Soccer League matchup on Monday at Botkins Community Park.

The Trojans (4-7-1, 4-0-1) started the scoring with less than 15-minutes to play in the first half when junior captain Addison Blindauer found the back of the net to get out to a 1-0 lead.

Senior captain Deedee Pitts wasted little time in getting back on the board as she scored a goal at 12-minutes left in the half before freshman Brylie Greve did the same to take a 3-0 lead.

With less than a minute to play in the half, Pitts nabbed another goal as Botkins took a 4-0 lead into the half.

“We played kind of sloppy in the first half even though we scored four,” Trojans head coach Lil Carson said. “We have more speed than they do and when Deedee and Blindauer are on, they’re going to score. It doesn’t matter what the field is like.”

The final goal came with 17-minutes left in the match as freshman Sophia Lotz snuck the ball past the Spencerville goalkeeper for the final score of 5-0.

“In the beginning of the season it was just two girls scoring,” Carson said. “Since then, we’ve had a lot of different girls get on the scoreboard. It’s certainly a positive going into the end of the season.”

With the win, Botkins tied the Anna Rockets (8-2-2, 4-0-1) for the league title.

“I didn’t know anything about any of the other schools in the league coming in,” Carson said. “Winning is always the goal. It’s been a long season and we’ve had a lot of losses by just one goal. To get near the end of the season like this and have a shutout in the last couple games in the league is pretty awesome.”

All of Botkins’ wins this season have come in the form of shutouts with its lone tie being against Anna in late August.

The Trojans are back in action on Thursday against Allen East at Allen East at 5 p.m. as they begin to round out their season.
