Umsteads celebrate 60 years of marriage

ANNA—Carleton and Shirley Umstead, of Anna, recently celebrated 60 years of marriage with their children during a weekend at Lake Erie, Sept. 13 through 15. The family enjoyed fishing, shopping, relaxing, dinner, and a campfire on the banks of Lake Erie.

Carleton and the former Shirley Covault were married on June 21, 1959. Witnesses to the wedding were best man Jerry Sheely and maid of honor Carolyn Umstead-Dismukes, deceased, as well as flower girl Linda Sue Glessner.

For their 50th anniversary, celebrated in 2009, the couple renewed their vows at Maplewood Methodist church, the denomination that they originally married in.

Carleton and Shirley are the parents of James and Laura Umstead, of Lebanon; Lisa and Jason Wright, of Jackson Center; and Jon and Carol Umstead, of Urbana. They have nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Shirley is the daughter of Harold and Pauline Covault, of Maplewood. She graduated from Sidney High School in 1958 and went on to Bluffton University, graduating from Wright State University.

Carleton is the son of Floyd and Wilma Umstead. He graduated from Anna High School in 1958 and joined the Marines after graduation, spending the Umstead’s first three years of marriage as a marine.

Carleton owned the Anna Sunoco gas station and Anna Station Bar & Grill, and worked many other jobs to provide for his family. Shirley worked for Anna Local Schools for 31 years, was a caregiver for her mother and mother-in-law when needed, and continues to substitute teach at schools in Shelby cCounty.

The couple enjoys fishing, relaxing, spending time with their family, and keeping up with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities.
