HOUSTON — Cheryl and Edward Chappie, of Houston, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at an open house, Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015, from 1 to 4 p.m., in the Houston Community Center.

They ask that gifts be omitted.

Edward and the former Cheryl Shaffner were married Sept. 18, 1965, in the Oran Christian Church in Oran. The Rev. Gary Hodges performed the ceremony after running home to get a tablecloth to cover the bride. Rain had begun to fall 30 minutes earlier. The tablecloth kept the bride dry as she walked outside to enter the church. During the ceremony, the church lost power and the wedding became a candlelight service.

Witnesses were Marilyn Beasecker Young, Cynthia Behm Naseman, Jodi Ayers Wright, Susy Behm Miller, Tom Veit, Jim Selanders, Jeff Behm, Fredrick Behm Jr. Don Carity and Howard “Bud” Shaffner. The organist was Samuel Pellman, who was 12 at the time. Jim Allison and Paul Shaffner Roeth were vocalists. The couple had met while attending Oran Christian Church.

The Chappies are the parents of two sons and daughters-in-law, Toma nd Kara Chappie, of Carlisle, Massachusetts, and Dan and Deanna Chappie, of Houston, and a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Bruce Walker, of Houston. They have five grandchildren.

Cheryl retired as cafeteria manager from Hardin-Houston Schools in 2008. Ed retired from Primary Eyecare in 2006 after 46 years of service.
