Meyers mark 60 years

NEWPORT— Joan and Adolph “Sonny” Meyer, of Newport, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, Aug 3, 2017.

Sonny and the former Joan Utz were married, Aug. 3, 1957, in the St. Michael Catholic Church in Fort Loramie. The Rev. Paul Raterman performed the ceremony on a hot sunny morning that gave way to a storm in the afternoon. Witnesses were maid of honor Betty (Utz) Bayne, sister of the bride, bridesmaids Shirley (Meyer) Balster, sister of the bridegroom, and Charlene Meyer, sister-in-law of the bridegroom, and groomsmen James Utz and Michael Utz, both brothers of the bride. The couple had met at the Holy Angels Parish picnic.

Sonny is the son of the late Louise and Julius Meyer. He has a living sister, Shirley Balster, of St. Henry. Two other sisters, Marilyn Caprara and Carolyn Boerger, and four brothers, Robert Meyer, Clifford Meyer, William Meyer and Delbert Meyer, are deceased.

Joan is the daughter of the late Alma and Charles Utz. She has two brothers, James Utz and Michael Utz, both of Fort Loramie, and a living sister, Betty Bayne, of Sidney. Another sister, Mary Jean Utz, is deceased.

The Meyers have two living sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Meyer and Walter and Kathy Meyer, all of Newport, and two daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Kevin Borchers, of Russia, and Janet and Mike Siegel, of Fort Loramie. Two other sons, Dale Meyer and Donald Meyer, are deceased. They have 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Sonny was the owner-operator of Meyer’s Garage from 1964 to 1986. He served as a Shelby County commissioner from 1985 to 1993. Joan is a homemaker.

The couple are members of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

Sonny enjoys fishing and spending time with family and friends. Joan enjoys playing cards and spending time with their grandchildren.
