Sock & Buskin Players mourns loss of founding member

SIDNEY — In 2017, Sock & Buskin Players started working on Board reorganization so they can continue with their mission statement by producing and performing live theater in the community by utilizing local talent and resources.

“We held auditions in June for the August production of ‘Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr,’ which was directed by Laney Shaw at The Historic Sidney Theatre,” said Christi Thomas, business manager.

Her report continues:

Shaw also received the Karl Hesselbein Memorial Scholarship in August, annually presented by Sock & Buskin.

Early in the year, the group mourned the loss of Kent Smith, one of their founding members, great character actor, and an award-winning newsletter editor.

For some, the love of theater and the arts also takes them to other venues and other cities. In 2017, S&B members also worked with Raise the Roof for the Arts, Sidney Christian Academy, Fairlawn High School, Troy Civic Theatre and Jesters Roving Players.

In the fall, the group moved most of their props, costumes, lights, and set pieces into a storage unit and Alyson Morris continues as president. Other board members include Bob Blindauer, Linda Edwards, Kevin Frazier-Jones, Maureen Joines, Liz Maxson, Mike Maxson, Kathy Streb, Webmaster Maggie Streb, Business Manager/Newsletter Editor Christi Thomas, and Historian John Widney. With some members’ terms expiring and the continued reorganization of the group, Sock & Buskin Players is looking for more people who would like to be on the Board and help with ideas of plays or workshops for those interested in community theater.

Membership is open to the public with $10 dues for an adult or $15 for a family. Paid membership receives advance notices of upcoming auditions, shows, and information on other Ohio community theaters. The Board meets the second Saturday of each month at 8:30 am at a place TBA.

Sock & Buskin continues to partner with the Kroger Company and for those people who have a Kroger Plus card and sign up via the internet, S&B receives a dollar percentage of your purchases. For more information you can check out their website or contact Christi Thomas.

Sock & Buskin is a member of the Sidney-Shelby County Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio Community Theatre Association, and the American Association of Community Theatre. In 2018, the group is working on ideas for a dinner theater with a comedy play.
