Event aims to “Defy the Odds”

SIDNEY — An event to bring awareness and resources to the heroin epidemic affecting Shelby County and surrounding communities is set to take place at the Shelby County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 9.

“Defying the Odds” will be held from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. It is free and open to the public, however, donations will be accepted. Attendees are welcomed to donate money, canned food, hygiene items, as well as DVDs/literature/workbooks related to recovery. All donations will go to the Shelby House and Community Housing, Inc.

The event was made possible by Cody Odom, the Shelby County director of Families of Addicts, and Jessica Peltier, an FOA volunteer and family advocate. Its goal is to “(defy) the odds by providing resources for recovery and taking back our community.”

According to Odom, the gathering is an adaptation of an event held in previous years, called Rock the Difference for Heroin Awareness.

“We thought it was important to keep having these resources available in Shelby County,” he said.

Several local entities will be in attendance to provide information and resources, including the Tri-County Board of Recovery and Mental Health Services, Families of Addicts, Recovery and Wellness Center, Shelby County Counseling Center, and Applegate Recovery.

“We’re trying to mix it up,” Odom said. “To have (organizations) coming from Shelby County, Miami County, and even the Dayton area.”

Along with addiction and recovery resources, the event will provide food and entertainment.

Christian hip-hop artist Josh Niblick, aka J-NiBB, will headline at 6 p.m. Several other local bands, along with a DJ, will also be featured.

T-shirts will be available for purchase, with black t-shirts for $12 and green t-shirts for $10, Odom said. Proceeds from these sales will go toward the Shelby House and Community Housing, Inc., as well.

Those who are unable to attend but wish to make a donation, may do so by mail to:
