New Bremen plans fishing derby

NEW BREMEN — The New Bremen Parks will hold its annual fishing derby on July 26 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Kuenning-Dicke Natural Area, New Bremen. Registration begins at 6 p.m.

There will be no fishing prior to the beginning of the fishing derby. Anyone fishing before the derby begins will be disqualified from any prizes.

There will be three age categories for the derby: ages 3-6; ages 7-10; and ages 11-15.

In the age group 3-6, parents may cast their children’s fishing rods. Parents are encouraged to let the kids completely catch their fish. The kids must reel the fish in by themselves or the fish will be disqualified.

In the 7 to 10 age group, parents may cast the child’s fishing rods but kids are to catch and reel in their own fish. In the 11 to 15 age group, kids must cast their own rods and catch their own fish.

Any fish caught by a parent will be disqualified. Contestants may only use one fishing pole at a time.

Parents are asked to bring a bucket to put the fish in for each child.

The parks department will have wax worms, night crawlers and red worms to hand out. They might have minnows also.

Prizes will be awarded in each age group for the most fish caught for the first three places. There will also be a prize of a rod and reel in each age group for the biggest fish caught.

Door prizes will also be given out during the fishing derby.

There will be two grand prizes — one for the biggest fish caught overall and one for catching the most fish overall.
