HOUSTON — The Houston-UVCC FFA Chapter won the State Agricultural Communication Career Development Event (CDE) on Saturday, Feb. 16, in Columbus.

The Agricultural Communication CDE prepares students for careers in communication and journalism. Students were required to write a communication media plan on a provided scenario, prepare and deliver a presentation on their plan to a panel of judges, and compete in several communication practicums.

This year, the scenario was advocating for your local FFA chapter’s community service projects. The practicums were web design, feature stories, news releases, and a letter to the editor.

The team consisted of Eliza Mertz, daughter of Louie and Tina Mertz, of Houston; Lena Stangel, daughter of Jason and Karen Stangel, of Piqua; Drew Walker, son of Bruce and Connie Walker, of Houston; and Morgan Wemmer, daughter of Lee and Molly Wemmer, of Houston.

“I really enjoy FFA and this contest because it truly prepares me for my future,” said Mertz. “After learning about the communication industry through this CDE, I have decided to major in visual communication next year at Bowling Green State University.”

Individually, Wemmer placed third, Walker eighth, Stangel 12th, and Mertz 16th. The team qualifies for and will compete at the National FFA Convention this October in Indianapolis, Indiana.
