Inmate escapes work detail

SIDNEY — Shelby County Sheriff procedures regarding work details will not change after an inmate escaped during a work detail on Tuesday.

A crew of inmate workers were in the 800 block of Park Street at 1:45 p.m. on Tuesday when Gunnar Francis, 22, 11234 Schenk Road, was reported missing. He was found in an alley along Oak Street near North Street, and deputies returned him to the Shelby County Jail.

Francis was sentenced to probation after he was found guilty of trespassing on April 17. He violated his probation on June 22 when he failed a drug test, testing positive for amphetamines, cocaine, alcohol, fentanyl, MDMA and methamphetamines, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail on July 7.

Chief Deputy Jim Frye said Francis was doing lawn maintenance in a metropolitan housing detail, and went around a corner. When he was out of sight, he threw down his tools and ran. The deputy in charge was Chuck Shepherd.

“They’re trustees, so we’re supposed to trust them a little, even though we don’t really,” Frye said.

The repercussions of Francis’ escape have yet to be decided in court.
